Merry Christmas John Wylde

Merry Christmas to a man who has done much for his community, The Cape League, and youngsters and oldsters alike. John Wylde is responsible for hundreds, nay, thousands of people to be exposed to an excellent level of Baseball. John is a man who places honesty and respect ahead of batting averages and ERA's.

A big man among giants.

It is a rare day when a blabbermouth talk show host is at a loss for words. This is one of those times. The last time I had trouble with coming up with something to say was the last time we had three full moons in one month.

I doubt I can say anything that has not already been said about John Wylde. Maybe an anecdote will explain all we need to about the man.

I was chatting with John before a game. The conversation was the usual, i.e., fastballs, curves, hitting with two strikes, the importance of a one and one count. Then the conversation took on another element.

John showed me a wrinkled up letter he had been carrying in his back pocket. From the looks of it he had carried it around a long time and he had shown many times. It was a letter from the Mom of a player who had played for the Wareham Gatemen a few years before. Her son finished his college baseball career, received his degree and was now on with his life.

The Mom made little mention about how much her son had learned about baseball. No, she was thanking John for the intangibles her son had gained during his summer in Wareham.

The Mom gushed about how much the young man had matured that summer. She was pleased with his attitude and a better understanding of what was important in life. Her son had nothing but good things to say about his summer mentor.

The point here is not that John is a dedicated baseball man. We all know that. John is as competitive as any other baseball person in the Cape League.

John quietly helps young men to become real men. Their learning the sometimes hard lessons of life is as important to John Wylde as one of his players becoming a Major Leaguer.

This web site is dedicated one of the finest men I know.

The photos below were selected from the Wareham Gatemen web site. I'm sure I missed many which should have been included. For that oversight you have my regrets in advance.

Merry Christmas, John. You are loved and respected.

Best wishes from my family to yours.......Moe Lauzier
